A gilded sun filters through verdant foliage, settling below the hillside to be chased by moonlight shimmering between tufts of spun silken cloud. Some pay a glance to the fading day; others, being too focused, take no notice.
Who's working late in the lab this evening? Is it . . . a wizened, contemplative mage, whose love for his studies blooms eternal?
A clandestine sorceress of royal lineage, committed to mastering her craft? (I'll take fashion tips from her, along with energy manipulation and potistry techniques, thank you.)
An inventive scientist on the verge of a critical discovery?
Faraday in his lab
A devoted natural philosopher, who lets not those of lesser mind deter his obsessions (and whose passion may escape the confines of his assigned lab!)?
A determined magistra, who lets not the old-fashioned prejudices against her gender stop her progress?
Radiochemist Marie Curie in lab
A crotchety old alchemist, perhaps aided by his long-suffering apprentice?
A cunning warlock, whose knowledge spans the subtlest of toxins and who fears not to employ their use?
A university student and science major, who takes her "chemistry" studies in a different direction and to a whole new level, unbeknownst to the department?
Or is it an overworked teacher, who looks about and thinks, "All those detentions and this blasted place still isn't clean; never mind, a whole class worth of grading yet to do on atrocious essays!"
Regardless of who you find, be a good fellow there and look, but don't bother!
Though when all is said and done, and sometimes even before it is done, one needs to set down their tools and swap an exclamation of "Eureka!" with, "Time for a drink, dammit!"
