I have called upon the goddess
and found her
within myself.
~Marion Zimmer Bradley
I'd say it began with Jezebel.
But in truth, it began long before then, the seeds planted months earlier: the seeds of the rising fire. My little coven's work with Circe, Medusa, Jezebel and Sekhmet only fed the sparks that had already been kindled in my deep subconscious.
So maybe it began when one of the best bitch fire-goddesses I've ever known prodded the edge of my consciousness before shoving that fog clear outta the way and asking, "You ready now? Ready for me? 'Cuz the world, she ready for you. She needs you, bitch, and you holdin' back. You are a goddess, a queen, and you've been hiding your fire. I get it, you were afraid then, even more than now, and you were broke on top of that. But you ain't broke now, are you. Are you! So burn bright, bitch baby!"
Yeah. Aliria? She's like that. She is that kind of goddess. And I needn't struggle to appropriate, to unearth some ancient pagan deity or rite, either. All I need unearth is the spirit of the earth right under my feet, that of pressurized heat and dark, hidden transformation, the more dangerous of our planet's feminine mysteries.
Aliria-Naphtha, queen of underworld fire and power, is speaking! Reach within, she whispers, and then bring it out. And don't settle for less.
"A Queen will not play games; she knows those that play are not worth her time.
A Queen will not jump up and down trying to get the attention of those that choose not to see her; she has too much self respect and dignity.
A Queen will not compete based on lies and half-truths; she is too clever for this.
A Queen does not talk ill of other Queens; for her heart loves all her sisters.
A Queen does not settle for a Joker, for she knows that her heart deserves a true King."
~ Ara ~
Recently my inner fire has been erupting to the surface in my own typically quiet-outside-but-loud-inside way, a kind of falling in love with life. Powerful sexual energy in me is transformed into creativity. And as an Earth person, I find it fitting that my "getting into" fire at last comes via the medium or inspiration of Oil, which is basically solar fire wedded to earthly matter. Aliria-Naphtha is Planet Earth's fiery inner nature, of which fossil fuels are a part. Working with the deva of this realm has been helping me tap my own buried potential energy in multiple senses. One example of this is my making art again, in multiple media. Another has been the revival of my urge to write, always a good sign, and about a mix of spiritual, political and petroleum topics in particular.
An antique sign that exemplifies an "Alirian" goddess attitude: You can't take, not without price, but you can ask --- but be warned, once you've asked for it . . . you've asked for it!
One character who made a recent and bold appearance shares the name of the second imaginary friend I ever had, Pennzoil, but promptly decided she wished to be female. Hallmarks of this 30+-year-later iteration of the persona include serious authority, a shameless presence . . . and a mouth that alternates between a diplomat-grade polish and a flamethrower fueled by dirty lube-oil. In the fictitious world of her Earthly mission, she is Head of Control Comm --- a kind of global hub and master phone operator, an extraterrestrial who learned a dozen languages to do her job. Greasing the wheels with stuffy government types is part of that job, but she identifies in spirit more with the soulful sass of the street world of people of color --- and since a voice-only position means visual anonymity, when she's off the clock, she holds nothing back. Accosting her verbally and physically is a bad idea, for she will fight. She's the type who will spice up any casual sentence by tacking the word "bitches" on the end of it (i.e. "Master of my domain, bitches") in her low grungy voice, and who has no qualms whatsoever about getting a lick-job from her lover while she's kicked back right there at the op desk . . . In short, Pennzoil Alyzrinol is a certified bitch.
While I can't get away with everything she does (plus, she is an alien), this character's attitude is more than a bit liberating. She's straight out of Aliria-Naphtha's essence, that one, and urges me to find my own bad-ittude and strength, to take my power back for myself. She is a prime example of a character who well embodies a larger deity-energy or archetype: After all, besides hot and powerful, Aliria is capable of ultra-refinement yet at her core is hella cruuude, honey.
As for this wonderful surge of liberating dark fire and creativity and where it's coming from, Aliria smirks to me: "Bitch, I am the goddess of power, after all, and underworld power at that . . . What'd you expect? I will take you as my lover, then take over your world and set it on fire. It's what I do, because I am the Queen of Oil. And if you do it right, with respect along with your enthusiasm, I won't burn you up and kill you."
Besides being energized, the feeling is one of great rebirth and renewal, with only a few things holding me back, which I can work out shortly. Excitement swells within me, overcoming some of the fear.
Chaos is the mother of all things
Darkness gives way to light
Out of the cauldron we fly with wings
Only then will we obtain sacred sight
Fire to light the way in the abyss
As with Jezebel and her refusal to finish with anything less than the style of a queen, my rising soulfire has resulted in a longing for more outward expression in appearance. Earrings, braids, different clothes than I'm used to. I'm a shapeshifter after all, and though I'm too practical to gussy up on a daily basis (factory work also makes it hard), I feel an urge to once again celebrate my body and its trappings as a work of art. To explore, experiment, adorn, and above all, take pleasure and have fun.
I have been so repressed, for so long, and I don't mean by the potently dark style of Snape --- his was another form of liberation. I mean all the crap that came before and between him, stuff I was raised with, stuff bosses hounded me with . . . Time to shake that shit for good! Dress and look how I want!
There's a moment in The Help when Aibileen says, "Miss Skeeter always looked like somebody else told her what to wear." In many cases, it's not somebody: It's your own inner critic that's censoring you, because you're stuck in caring that others might care. By the end of the book, Skeeter's wearing the new late-60s stuff. She's found her fire; she's said, "Fuck 'em." Aliria says, "Fuck 'em." It's time for me to once again say, "Fuck 'em," and mix it up again! While I don't advocate for my ego to be too dependent on maintaining a single outward style, like a crutch, style can be both a way to loosen up and play and a method of proclaiming, "Fuck 'em --- I've had enough! Let's rock."
“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” ~ Abraham Maslow
I will not censor myself for your tastes
Pull the veil over my truth to give you comfort
Silence my words for your ears
Or change my heart to fit into the confining box of your definitions.
I seek those that don’t demand that I fit into any shape they have carved
For they know I break the mold.
I embrace those that embrace me as I am
Fluid and flowing alchemy
Changing in my awakening
Burning with the fuel of my passion
Rising to what I was born to be.
Squeeze myself into the labels that you lay out for me to wear?
No.
I burn them all and walk naked in the acceptance of my soul and dance in the flames
~ The Goddess Circle - C. Ara Campbell
Lilith, the "goddess of the clitoris", rises in a woman to help her claim her power and right to passion
For me, one of the Oil Goddess's most potent lessons, spiritually, is that of transformation. Incredibly so, especially in how it's combined with patience, timing, and ignition. Think about it: She takes millions of years to collect old stuff, dead stuff, stuff that once served its inhabitants yet no longer lives, then pressurize and distill and recombine what she's gathered into some of the most potent potions the world --- certainly the natural world, and the human world as well --- has ever known. Millions of years to make exquisitely complex mixtures of carbon and other elements that can release almost unfathomable power, the stored energy of the sun, in a fraction of a second. Rock Oil is at once among the most dense and volatile manifestations possible at once, and one of the most versatile, as well.
What does this mean for spiritual growth? Aliria reminds us that we all have years' worth of stuff we've gathered and accumulated, be it experiences, memories, spiritual lessons, emotional baggages, physical possessions, and sometimes just plain crap. Any or all of it can become fuel we can burn through, at various rates and in various ways, to power a much-needed transformation --- especially if we've done our work and processed it well beforehand. Often, it sits stagnant for years, and all we need is a trigger to set it off. We can control that trigger, although, just as with Mother Earth lately, our trigger might be halfway out of our hands, because it's a response --- as with Earth's and Oil's --- to something like patriarchal stupidity or greed. Our trigger might be as simple as, All of a sudden I have fucking had enough.
“And when all that was left was ashes, she would again clothe herself in flame. Rising from the dust of her past to rekindle the spark of her future. She was a Phoenix, her own salvation; rebirthed, renewed, resurrected.” — LaRhonda
But I feel that some control is needed, for both our trigger and our "rate of burn", because another of Aliria's lessons points out what we can become when our rising fire and energy is flung widely, at random, irresponsibly, or unrequested in large amounts over those we intended to help: toxic. What stagnates too long, Oil tells us, can become toxic. What burns hideously out of control and too quickly can also be toxic, damaging us. But what is controlled, channeled into creative and balanced pursuits, can be transformative and healing. Finally, it bears noting that, as with Oil, not all of our buried gunk necessarily should be dredged up and transformed into fire all at once, or even at all. Again, it might damage us, burn us up. Timing and methods are key. These are important and lifelong lessons to master, for if we learn them right, we maximize our power --- to liberate ourselves, and break oppressive systems!
Magick in general, and that of Dark goddesses especially, is all about transformation. Kali, Pele, Persephone, Hekate, and Gaia Herself all dance the dance of destruction and new creation. But there is something so potent for me about working with a non-traditional deva whose province is one of the most exploited and abused by patriarchy and capitalism in the world. We can steal, sell and use Aliria's gifts all we want, thinking ourselves so mighty; in truth, we are now mere slaves to her power, and she is dancing us to death! Our own fire of spirit must rise if we are to heal that relationship and pass the test of Dark Earth.
Women have been suppressing anger and rage for a very long time. When smashed down, deep inside their cells, deep inside their wombs, it manifests as depression, as addiction, as powerlessness and helplessness, as deep sobs erupting from the cold floor of their bathrooms, as mournful sighs as they struggle to retrieve their breath.
Oh my beloved sisters, do not fear your anger, it has its place too. It is the catalyst for change, the awakening of transformation, the arrow that births movement and reclamation of your power.
Let go of the shame that creeps at your side, that cunningly lures you back into suppression of these emotions.
Your emotions are sacred, and they are safe to feel.
Any person who tells you that you are too emotional has not yet touched the wisdom of the ocean's waves, the power of the volcano's eruption and the healing of the thunder and lighting, crackling and proclaiming "I am life."
Allow your anger and rage to move you, to inspire you to feel deeper, to propel you into sacred ceremony, to guide you in the flames where you commune with the beasts of the night and learn about the ancient darkness that most dare not seek.
That is power.
It is courage that we embody when we stand witness to the roar of rage and allow the stories of trauma to emerge. It is our ancestors voices, the pounding of their fists and their drums that rumble through us, calling for transformation, and the clearing of the swamp so we may rebirth, renew, rise and end this vicious cycle.
Thousands of years of oppression, exploitation, rape, murder and violence against our great great mothers, our mothers, our daughters and sisters, it is damn safe and justified to feel anger. It is a necessary part of the grieving process. Do not cower in shame and blame yourself any further for the fire in your belly, own it, embody it and use this energy as the bridge to your empowerment.
Anger equals action, equals movement.
Anger is what summons a woman to say no more to abuse and violence. Anger is what protects the babies from the predator. Own it.
It is fluid, not static, let it flow through you.
It is fluid, not static, let it flow through you.
It is fluid, not static, let is flow through you.
As you allow yourself to dance with the fire, you will learn that it can not consume or possess you.
You are the vessel it expresses it's power through, you are the circuit the energy flows through, allow it to inspire you into bravery and right action.
Be lava, let it erupt, and then let it flow.
Love.
- Ashley Aurora
Aliria's medicine demands transformation, whether slowly or quickly, but lately, quick action seems to be required, all the more so because it is our house that is burning, thanks to a misuse of Aliria's own sacred power. Rising fire in my spirit and that of countless other womyn coincides with the rising of Earth's fire, both the idea and reality that Nature is upset, angry; burning in rage. The Amazon has been on fire three weeks now and none of the mainstream media outlets are covering it. I'm like, Dude: did you miss the part where that is your breathing oxygen, hello? The power of the Earth is not to be denied, and our relationship with Her --- and thus our fate --- what we make of it! Womyn and men in tune with our Mother's spirit are waking up to take action, reclaiming power for good and healing, against those who use power for selfish reasons alone. What more impactful statement is there than reclaiming Dark Earth Power herself as sacred? She is issuing her ultimate challenge to us, to take full cosmic responsibility for our ability to wield power, including hers. Failure of the test means extinction, and possibly soul damage as well.
As I say, our first mistake was treating the Earth, and especially her dark aspect Aliria-Naphtha, like our whore in the first place. The second mistake was failing to ask her her price! But patriarchy doesn't like to ask, does it? It would rather assume, feel entitled, and then take: It is a toddler who never wants to be told, "No, your place in this world is a lot bigger than you." This is why we're in trouble. It's why Earth, and womyn too, are saying, "No-fucking-more." It's why our systems and mindset must change. Unless we wish to go extinct sooner rather than later, of course. So truly working with Aliria, this "goddess of power," far from resulting in a senseless waste of fuel or show of macho machine prowess, actually begets frugality and deep respect for both Gaia the living Earth and fossil fuels.
"Primordial Chaos
Beauty, brilliance and strength
Creator-destroyer you hold the power of the infinite spark.
FIRE I wield your power
I AM your warrior.
I AM queen
I am the shadow in the night that is unseen.
I am the energy you feel but can not see
Underestimate my power and you will see your own demise
Through the ashes I shall always rise.
I am the horned one.
Sacred whore
Eternal life flows through my core
My sun has opened the door.
My silver light will pierce your soul.
I am pure energy.
I am Goddess."
-Lilith/Amie
Along with my exploration of bitchy goddesses and the rise of inner magical womyn's fire has come an increased openness to say how I feel --- occasionally with great attitude. The rebirth of Pennzoil as a foulmouthed operator is evidence of this. Creativity, political action, and expression of our newfound energy means going up against those who fear it. No oil company wants their goods to escape the pipeline. In a patriarchal system, womyn's power is similarly seen as something to suppress and contain and channel, own and utilize and consume, or both. Thus, it is actually our duty as womyn in service to our Mother Earth to "escape the pipeline", act and speak in ways where we've been sanctioned. Language, one magazine points out, is used as a weapon of control against womyn by establishments, i.e. "stay in your place, slave", on grounds of supposed purity (yet how filthy are the shadows of many patriarchal systems?):
"The desire to maintain an ideal of spiritual spotless-ness has always been a driving force of patriarchy; the introduction of soap simply added an implicit caveat suggesting that natural means of purging impurity were insufficient—true cleansing required a man-made product designed to eliminate filth."
I too got this as a kid, and I too am breaking free, aided by Aliria's potent fiery bitchiness and by a group of womyn-friends who regularly exclaim, "Fuck that shit! Fuck the patriarchy!" In reclaiming both our sacredness and so-called dirty mouths at once, I realize we are doing a far more profound thing: We are reclaiming the status of Earth Herself, with all her dirt, poisonous plants, untamed smelly animals, pond scum and, yes, crude oil, no longer as "fallen" but as sacred. But the process requires continuous awareness, because of how womyn have been conditioned by the System to treat Earth and each other:
"Women who benefit from unequal systems are often their most ardent executors, even upholding them at their own peril. But how long until even the most well-behaved woman crosses the ever-tightening boundary of propriety and finds herself the object of the same judgment she imposed on her sisters? How long before she, too, finds herself in need of purification by a society that will never deem her clean enough?
A strength beyond clean:
The assumption that women can be cleansed, reconstituted, and returned to some presumably natural state of purity has regularly resulted in brutal retaliation against those who resist such rehabilitation. People who are afraid of our conviction and strength will always try to silence us, cleanse us, and teach us to muffle ourselves and spread our internalized fears to others as a warning. The effort is not just about minimizing our voices, but about snuffing out our flames, the soap and the water together an attempt to take from us some of the most powerful weapons we have. And while a bridle can temporarily prevent speech, it cannot stop us from formulating the ideas that we will eventually speak. Submerging us in water cannot douse our spirits, and washing indelicate words from our mouths will not keep us from expressing ourselves in the manner we choose."
When the pain of non-expression, of silence, becomes worse than the pain of speaking out and doing, rules be damned, then it's long past time to bust loose and release the fire. I spent too many years futilely kissing toady ass, wasting my time, energy, and probably soul as well. Aliria brandishes a fiery whip in my face, saying, "No more! If you let them, unawake and de-enchanted pitiful little people will use your energy the way they use mine, my sacred oil, use it to try and make themselves more powerful or boost their own goals, without actually gaining one goddamn thing from it, spiritually --- so don't let them! Either escape the pipeline, or own it. Your life is finite the way my gifts and tolerance levels are, so take my lesson into yourself: Give where the most spiritual good results for all, but for those who disrespect, overdemand, exploit? Burn their useless asses down!! Make fossils of them! And finally, play! Play as I play, dance on the remains of those who would scorn or use you. Laugh flames in their faces." An unleashed mouth, after all, can be a form of play as well as righteous action.Rage against the machine
is not only understandable but becomes a sacred duty
when you realize they're using you to fuel the machine
and its product isn't meeting your soul's quality control.

I will not only cut cords
When I need to
I have and will cut
Entire many-tentacled monsters
And huge tangled jungles of lies
I will not only burn bridges
When it's aligned
I can and will burn
Entire malevolent empires and realms
Never met a machete or torch
I did not like
When I really need it
Or the Earth does

Claiming our fire and sacredness as womyn has gone hand-in-hand with a reawakening of sexual freedom and expression. Jezebel has become a symbol of wanton sexuality, though in reality, this Pagan queen was by all historical accounts loyal to her married husband king. Facing her murderers with pride, in full queenly adornment and painted face, was slandered as the behavior of a hussy by the patriarchal "winners" (and thus, the authors of history), but a new generation of people is slowly waking up to this as another rendition of the same ol' misogynist bullshit that has twisted society's values and perpetuated needless shame to the present day. Sexually or not, what Jezebel teaches us, like Medusa, is sovereignty: King or no king, I am a queen, I am my own woman; and if I wanna fuck, I'll fuck . . . and if I don't wanna, then likewise.
But work with Jezebel for me only added to the fire sparked by Aliria-Naphtha . . . and if power is an aphrodisiac, then who better to ignite sexual kundalini fire than the goddess of power? "My power is the Earth's," she whispers. "Claim it as sacred, take it back from the Disenchanted Ones (patriarchy), and wield it well." Again and again in my life, the rise of sexual energy has corresponded to a huge burst of spiritual inspiration and creativity. It is rising once more, with attitude!

There are some that don't like to
see a woman survive without shame,
regain her flame-
so they curse her name.
When you've been burned to ash, they want you to stay ash.
They draw illusions for themselves in your ash with pointy sticks.
They poke, they prod, they pry- wanting you to stay down.
But when your ash resurrects fertility, when your ash rebirths fire,
they do everything they can to keep you in the ground,
to bury your deep dark, to keep you bound.
And yet, you rise.
You rise and survive.
They writhe.
They pull out the scythe.
They are the witch-burners.
They only want your flame when it serves them.
They only want your flame when it doesn't burn them.
They only want your flame when it burns you straight up,
when they stand at your pyre, your blood in their cup.
What they don't realise is you've done this before,
this score- a thousand times and more.
Nine lives times nine times nine times nine.
Your heart is steel and iron,
roses and brine.
Glorious, notorious, victorious vine.
A furious forge of divine shine.
They covet your fire with hiss abyss sterility
as you transmute it into your fierce fertility
Sacra ash rebirth blight into bright!
Seven levels down, seven levels up-
this is your crown, this is your cup.
Rise and survive!
Rise and survive!
Your holy hum reverbs in the hive.
You are the Empress, and you are alive.

"When the patriarchy doesn't like how women behave, they call us crazy, evil, and witches. The Greek Medea, Priestess of Hekate, steps forward today to reclaim Herself as Woman of Power. How are you rejecting patriarchal labels and moving beyond to the soul seat of your Women Power?"
- Kimberly, Aug 20
The Goddess Lilith refused submission, subordination, subjugation.
In all forms. She insisted on her Queendom.
Her departure from patriarchal possession shows Her symbolic connections as a menstrual Goddess- She flew across the Red Sea (menstrual blood) and took refuge in a cave (womb, yoni), where it was claimed (in patriarchal mythos) that She then begat many children while copulating with demons for Her own pleasure. During a personal Lilith ceremony I did in 2002, I received that these "many children" actually symbolized the gift women have of multiple orgasms!
Lilith is the Goddess of the Clitoris, which is incredibly stimulated in menstrual sexuality. Penetration is not so much the pleasure bringer as is clitoral oriented pleasure during the Red Moon aspect of our cycles. For this is the time when a woman can achieve supremely powerful orgasms of ecstasy and pleasure, without drive of ovulation- ecstasy and pleasure belonging solely to her body and spirit in her glory.
Lilith is the Goddess of women who are lusty, bawdy, shameless, and brave- devoted to her truth, her pleasure, her equality, her freedom, and her power. She is passionate empowerment.

"My Interpretation of the Notre-Dame fire.
When the fire began I was speaking with Akara Sophia. There was a glorious rapport between us, a sense of something coming together, a deep knowing that the land and its many cultures, races and traditions could find common ground. A wonderful euphoric sense of YES!
To then come off that call and be plunged heart first into the news of Notre-Dame in flames. Despite the shocking images I watched the live video, calmy. I watched the spire fall. I walked away and went silent for the whole night, mulling it over in my body.
Later when I went to bed I dropped 3 drops of Frankincense on my tongue and went to Notre-Dame and asked to receive the Truth.
I sensed elation. I sensed purification. I sensed freedom of spirit. All night I was in vigil, weaving in and out of many things.
The Templars built this Cathedral in honour of Mary Magdalene, who was/is personified as the Black Madonna. Going deeper still, Sophia. So many people have been burnt at the stake in front of Notre-Dame. The last Grand Master Jacques de Molay and countless women accused of being a witch. Still to this day we do not know the true figures of how many women were executed. Notre-Dame is also the central heart of Paris, being a massive vortex of many interlinking ley lines, known as the 'point zero'. So whatever was happening up above, was also happening down below.
As we know this is happening at the start of Holy Week. The moment when Christ entered Jerusalem knowingly stepping into his initiation. One of the many artefacts housed at the cathedral is the Crown of Thorns. Thankfully, this is still safe.
And so, as we go deeper.. Beneath the Cathedral lay the ruins of a Temple of Isis, who had an altar devoted to Jupiter. In Greek mythology, this would have been Zeus, in Ancient Egypt - Osirus. The resurrecting king. And the King of Resurrection.
Towards the end of my lucid dreaming, I received these words.
"By the time Notre-Dame is fully restored the Roman Catholic Church would have fallen into disrepair".
My overall feeling is that the Sacred Feminine that dwells in the land beneath Notre-Dame is erupting and surging through all that is false and contained. As she opens the path like a fiery phoenix, so the utter pristine purity of the True Kings shall ARise. Birthed out of the flames of the Feminine. Only those who are brave enough to be incinerated by her act of destruction will arise as freshly newborn kings.
The Ile de la CitΓ© (Island Notre-Dame sits on), is an ancient Pagan/Celtic sacred site that is in the throes of birthing itself.
My heart goes out to all the people suffering and feeling a sense of great loss. And heartfelt gratitude to those courageous fire-fighters.
May Peace Prevail and May the Truth be known to all people."

"I will indeed find a way. Looks like I will make my own way, which is more challenging.
So get out the machete and start making the path.
Hack away the doubt
Hack away those that tell you that you can't
Hack away the feeling you are not lovable
Hack away what holds you back
Hack away patriarchy
Hack away dogma
Hack away societies rules
Hack away the feeling that you do not matter
Hack away the feeling that you are not enough
Fucking hack that shit away and burn the roots
Plant seeds of love
Plants seeds of compassion
Plant seeds of strength
Plant seeds of communication
Plant seeds that you are enough
Plant seeds that you are worthy
Plant seeds of healing
So that not only do you grow, but you can be an inspiration to others.
They may follow your path a while and realize now it's time they plant seeds too.
Make a new way.
I may fall
I may cry
I may feel alone
I might even be attacked or pulled back
But I will get up every fucking time.
Like a warrior I will rise
Not a warrior of hate or bigotry or fear,
But a warrior of love.
That strikes fear into fucking bigots and haters.
Like a fury I rise
Lilith, Kali, Hecate, Medusa at my side
Aphrodite, Shakti, Rhiannon follow my stride."

"Our magic should aim to help us grow, heal and
Advance on our path, but also effect the community and world we live in.
Mother Gaia is a part of us, we all are part of an intricate web. We can not stand by as injustices to the planet, environment and our people are taking place daily.
Magic is personal yes, but it is political. We are not seperate from the world, apathy is our enemy. One person can make a difference."
