Marching with Teachers

Today was fun, but it was fun with a serious cause! Oregon teachers marched in the streets to demand fair wages and, even more importantly and critically, increased funding for public schools and their programs. Under the reign of the government-appointed and Umbridge-like secretary of education Betsy DeVos, public schools stand to suffer a great deal.

From unicorns to Frozen's Elsa proclaiming "We won't let it go," kid-friendly activism took the message through the day.

Thus it was only fair and natural that Hogwarts should have a contingent as well, including Snape himself: In this case, wearing a sign on his back reading, "Snarky is better than ignorant!" My friend Kathleen and her two kids marched with me, dressed as witches and Marvel heroes.

After marching, there was plenty of time for photo ops, as well as an ice cream from a mobile cart, which I haven't enjoyed in quite a few years:

The day the real Snape will enjoy a strawberry shortcake popsicle is a distant and foreign day indeed, but I have plenty of fond memories of these things from my days as Harbormaster and then at the hardware store, so I have no qualms about an occasional indulgence. It's another one of of those opportunities for delicious contrasts.

Yum ♡
